Who were the Toltecs?

The Toltecs were a pre-Columbian civilization which flourished from ca. 900 A.D. to ca. 1200 A.D. in what is now Mexico. They were said to be advanced in the arts and architecture. They discovered pulque (a fermented drink) and had considerable knowledge of astronomy. The name Toltec reportedly means "man or woman of knowledge" or "master builder".
